Angela Lawrence, artist in oil & watercolour

Angela Lawrence paints in watercolour and oil images expressive of  the natural landscape or the elements with which landscape is composed. In this large portfolio there are paintings ranging from representational style, in the landscape section of the “view paintings” link, to the glimpses and impressions of landscape in the semi-abstract landscape section, and also abstract work inspired by ideas about that which makes up the landscape around us: rock, water, organic materials and colour.

Light across Galloway Hills - oil

Some of the  paintings on this website relate to the many years during which she lived in Finland; to the vast landscape of lakes and forests, the quality of the light and the extreme seasons; but most of the artwork has been created since moving to the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland in 2004. The contemporary style is spontaneous, expressive and improvisational and the influence of  the wide horizons of the sea and far receding distances of the hills is evident throughout much of her work.

Angela lives near Kirkcudbright, "Artists' Town",  and gathers inspiration from the beautiful coastal scenery of the Solway and Colvend coast, and from the Galloway hills  nearby. The mountain scenery of the Western Highlands is also a focus of the semi abstract oil paintings. Light, and the unspoiled qualities of nature in Scotland stimulate her work and ideas.  Some themes in the more abstract work seem to recur, the links between Finnish and Scottish nature being an interesting source of this.

The Clience Studio was  established and situated in "artists town" Kirkcudbright,  in 2005.  Since July 2007, however, the new Clience Studio  gallery in the nearby town centre of Castle Douglas is where the majority of her work can be seen, and Angela now has her studio alongside this. The gallery is open throughout the year.  Angela is still actively exhibiting around the country at many excellent venues, and details of these can be found on the exhibitions page. Commissions are considered; requests are welcome.
